Crypto still 'off the table' for Singapore's Temasek, four years after FTX flop (2026)

Temasek Holdings, the Singapore-based investment firm, has made a strategic decision to stay away from cryptocurrency investments, despite the sector's recent turmoil. This decision comes in the wake of Temasek's significant loss from its investment in the now-bankrupt FTX cryptocurrency exchange, which led to a $275 million writedown in 2022. Nagi Hamiyeh, president of Temasek Global Investments, cited regulatory uncertainty as the primary reason for this stance, stating that the company is 'still off the table' for crypto investments.

This move reflects a broader trend in the investment industry, as many firms are reevaluating their exposure to cryptocurrency due to its volatile nature and the ongoing regulatory challenges. Temasek's focus on blockchain technology and its infrastructure, however, suggests a continued interest in the underlying technology and its potential applications in the real economy.

In an interview with CNBC, Hamiyeh also highlighted the firm's emphasis on artificial intelligence (AI) and its long-term potential. He believes that AI adoption and the development of a commercial ecosystem around it are more important than pushing for frontier models. Temasek aims to increase its AI exposure from 6% to 15% of its portfolio by 2031, focusing on areas like automation, robotics, and industrial process optimization.

The firm's investment strategy in Europe has also been a significant focus. Over the past two years, Temasek has invested approximately €12 billion in the region, making it the second-largest investor behind the U.S. Hamiyeh pointed to Europe's strengths in luxury brands, energy transition, and family-owned industrials, where Temasek's long-term, patient capital can make a significant impact.

When it comes to defense contractors, Temasek takes a practical approach, considering dual-use technologies and their contribution to real-world conflicts. Biological and chemical weapons are explicitly off-limits, and the firm's only exposure to the defense sector is through ST Engineering. This balanced approach ensures that Temasek's investments align with its sustainability and ethical investing goals.

In conclusion, Temasek's decision to stay away from cryptocurrency investments and its strategic focus on AI, Europe, and practical defense investments demonstrate a thoughtful and forward-looking approach. As the investment landscape continues to evolve, Temasek's decisions will likely shape its portfolio and influence the broader industry.
