Stephen Graham Honored by Sir Paul McCartney at LIPA Graduation 2026 | Liverpool Event Highlights (2026)

Stephen Graham, a celebrated actor, writer, and producer, is set to be honored by Sir Paul McCartney at the Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts (LIPA) graduation ceremony. This recognition is a testament to Graham's remarkable career and his significant contributions to the creative industries. Born and raised in Kirkby, Graham has built an outstanding reputation in film and television, with acclaimed performances in 'This Is England', 'Boardwalk Empire', 'Line of Duty', 'Boiling Point', and 'Adolescence'. His work has earned him numerous awards and nominations, including BAFTAs, Primetime Emmys, and Golden Globes.

Graham is one of five leading figures from the creative industries who will receive the LIPA Companionship, an award that recognizes outstanding achievement and significant contributions to student learning. The other recipients include BAFTA-winning actor and writer Cathy Tyson, Paul Duhaney, Artistic Director of Africa Oyé, McFly founding member, songwriter, and author Tom Fletcher, and film producer and president of the Oscars, Lynette Howell Taylor. The Companionships will be bestowed by LIPA's Founding Patron, Sir Paul McCartney, during a ceremony that celebrates the achievements of over 400 graduating students from 28 countries.

The ceremony holds particular significance as it marks LIPA's 30th anniversary and the conferring of its first degrees. LIPA's Principal and CEO, Professor Sean McNamara, emphasized the importance of this milestone graduation, highlighting the creativity and collaboration that define LIPA's culture. McNamara stated that the graduating class of 2026 leaves LIPA as artists, innovators, and leaders, equipped with the skills and confidence to shape the creative and cultural industries.

For Lynette Howell Taylor, the honor is a full-circle moment. A proud Liverpudlian, she graduated from LIPA's Management degree in 2000 and has since produced over 25 feature films, including 'A Star Is Born'. In 2025, she was elected President of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, the organization behind the Oscars. Taylor expressed her gratitude, attributing her success to LIPA's founders, Mark Featherstone-Witty and Sir Paul McCartney, for creating a nurturing and cross-disciplinary environment that fosters the growth of artists and those who support them.

This recognition is a testament to the transformative power of education and the creative industries. It highlights the importance of institutions like LIPA in nurturing talent and fostering innovation. As Graham and the other recipients are honored, it serves as a reminder of the profound impact that creative individuals can have on the world, and the role that institutions like LIPA play in shaping the future of the arts.
